Organic Lawn Care

Frequently Asked Questions

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE ORGANIC LAWN CARE?

Organic lawn care utilizes methods that are better for the environment, and safer for your family and pets. Current research indicates the use of lawn chemicals and pesiticides may cause long-term health problems in humans and animals, and they have a detrimental impact on soil and waterways. Traditional lawn care methods that utilize synthetic chemicals only treat what we see growing above the soil, and more and more chemicals are often required as the lawn system is further imbalanced. Organic lawn care seeks to bring the entire system into balance by focusing on building healthy soil, which in turn grows healthy grass that is naturally drought-, disease-, and pest-resistant.

WHAT DO YOU USE FOR WEED CONTROL?

Organic weed control takes place on several fronts. First, using organic methods to build healthy, living soil minimizes weeds which often thrive in poor, compacted soils where fescue struggles to grow. Second, we overseed twice a year so fescue comes in thick, crowding out weeds. Third, each month that we treat your lawn, we use good old-fashioned labor to eradicate weeds by removing them with specialized tools that reach all the way down to the weed's roots. We also provide clients recommendations that help minimize weed growth in between treatments, such as adjusting mowing height to prevent scalping the lawn which can damage the grass and encourage weeds.

WHAT DO YOU USE FOR PEST CONTROL?

We use beneficial nematodes for natural pest control. Different types of nematodes target different types of pests. Nematodes that eat grubs can be used to deter moles who have taken to your yard due to the bountiful food source. Once the grubs aren't as plentiful, the moles will move on. Nematodes can also eliminate other pests like fleas.  A pest problem is often a symptom of imbalance in the lawn's ecosystem. Because our organic methods naturally bring back balance, we find that this often eliminates many pest problems as a result.

WHY IS TAKING A SOIL SAMPLE IMPORTANT?

A soil sample gives us important information about the soil, such as what it has too much of, and what it is lacking. Once we know the makeup of the soil, we can set out to naturally bring it back into balance. Soil testing also provides the pH of the soil which often times needs to be adjusted before grass seed can successfully germinate and grow.

WHAT DOES THE LIVING COMPOST TEA PROBIOTIC DO?

Our Living Compost Tea Probiotic infuses the soil with thousands of beneficial microbes. Please see our Living Compost Tea Probiotic page to learn more.

WHY DO YOU AERATE?

Aeration allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass's roots. It also helps to alleviate soil compaction, a common problem with the clay soil of Central Kentucky.

WHY DO YOU OVERSEED?

Overseeding helps prevent grass thinning and bare spots, and ensures the lawn grows in lush and thick to overcrowd weeds. We overseed once in the spring and once in the fall for maximum lawn impact.
